1. to prevent by acting first: »

2. to act sooner than and so get the better of; get ahead of; anticipate: »

3. to buy up (goods or other commodities) in advance in order to increase the price.
4. Obsolete. a) to lie in wait for; intercept. b) to obstruct by force.
